Ranking

The Farmland Protection Ranking Criteria are used to evaluate property characteristics and to prioritize applications. The system awards a predetermined number of points for various property features. Click HERE to download our Ranking Criteria sheet

Prioritizing Properties:
Properties are prioritized by Ranking Ratios. A Ranking Ratio equals the Ranking Criteria Score divided by the Offering Price/Acre*. Ratios are then ranked, and the largest final scores (those closest to 1) receive highest funding priority.

Example:
Mr. X owns 100 acres, scored 325 points, and asked for $55,700. Therefore, his ratio is .5835.
Equation: 325/ ($55,700/100 acres) = .5835
Ms. Y owns 100 acres, scored 375 points, and asked for $110,000. Her ratio is .3409.
Equation: 375/ ($110,000/100 acres) = .3409

Landowner Acreage Ranking Points Asking/Offering Price Ranking Ratio

#Acres Score Offering $ Ranking Ratio
Mr. X 100 acres 325 $55,700 .5835
Ms. Y 100 acres 375 $110,000 .3409

Mr. X has a higher ratio than Ms. Y, and he will receive funding priority. Mr. X. didn't score as well as Ms. Y on the Ranking Criteria but still outranked her because of his low offering price. As shown here, high rank is best achieved with a high Ranking Criteria Score and a low Offering Price.

* An Offering Price (or Asking Price) is the amount of money a landowner requests in exchange for the rights he/she is giving up through the conservation easement. An easement donation has no offering price and therefore will likely score highly.
