FundingThe Hampshire County Farmland Protection Program is funded through a county real estate transfer tax, grants from the federal Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program, and additional grants and gifts. The county transfer tax generates $2.20 per every $1,000 of land transactions in Hampshire County, and this tax, as required by law, is used exclusively to fund farmland preservation via easement purchases and associated appraisal, survey, legal, and administrative costs. Average annual income from these transfer taxes is $168,000. Although transfer taxes are currently the Program's primary source of income, matching funds from the Farm and Ranch Lands Protection Program and other sources are also sought to supplement these local funds.
